Oily amanitas

I'm processing quite a few kilos of amanitas for a vendor. Every once in a while I hit an oily amanita; the center refuses to dry, often an oily film develops on top. What is this oily goo? I process them at 185f

Turkey tails! How are you using them?

I know; they are not red and Mario is not about to jump on them but I figure they deserve some loving. Plus the winter time seems to be slowing down red mushroom topics... While winter foraging I came across a very nice flush of turkey tails. As the title says; how are you using your turkey tails? M...

Re: Beginners Preparation Guide

It is very very hard using the oven, you are doing two things that contradict each other. You need the ability to sustain the temperature at a specific range, while at the same time you need air movement in order to dehydrate. Your average oven can't do 160f, and is more likely to have a minimum tem...

Re: Beginners Preparation Guide

Basically you did what we all did; come up with your own Cliffs notes. I'll play devil's advocate and say that you know a whole lot more about what the process entails than if it was just handed to you on Cliffs notes.

Has anybody tried amanita for shingles?

My mom in her 80's has been suffering from the aftermath of shingles for years. Once the mushrooms come back I plan on making oils and tinctures to give it a try.

Has anybody tried them for this? If there are indications that it may work I may just buy some now.

Re: Eating AM Raw

Like most things in life it depends. There is a good chunk of misinformation because ibonetic acid is indeed used to crate brain lesions on lab animals. That sounds awful but you have to keep in mind that for that to happen it gets injected straight into the brain tissue itself; I have not seen any ...

Re: Making Amanita Honey

The chance of the microbial contaminations you two mention in raw honey-based ferments is already very low due to the various antimicrobial compounds in the honey and the osmotic pressure of the honey at the moisture content used in this ferment. That is correct for honey just sitting there at its ...

Re: Making Amanita Honey

From a practical standpoint is more than a culinary thing. Long story short once dehydrated the mushroom is preserved. Adding honey should not have a bearing on any further preservation as far as the active compounds are concerned. Considering how little humidity is in honey (around 15%, in contrast...

Re: Why decarb if fleece is mold/mucor and not amanita?

I was assuming that whatever you were talking about contained ibonetic acid. If you don't know what it has there is no point guessing unless you find somebody that has done the chemical analysts. Take Brugmansia arborea, the active ingredient hyoscine is a potent hallucinogen that unlike psilocybin ...

Re: Why decarb if fleece is mold/mucor and not amanita?

I don't know but let me share some of my ignorance, it may point you to the right tree to bark up to. Decarboxylations happen thought quite a few different reactions. They can happen through various biosynthesis processes (the plant does it), in the kitchen, and in the lab through complex interactio...
