Re: Are the stems useful at all?

The fly agarics in this fall's crop are so huge that I haven't been bothering to dry the stems. So having some left laying around, I fried one up in some olive oil, and of course ate it. A stout stem, maybe 6 inches long. It turns out that they're at least mildly psychoactive. Kind of tasty, too - I...

Re: Amanita Muscaria and physical health

but if you want to get into specific reports of liver and kidney problems, we could take a look at it. What do you mean? Here's what I was talking about: I also read something about kidney and liver damage. That might be serious, or it might be like the repetitive injections of ibotenic acid into t...

Re: alternative drying methods: induction stove top or sous vide

Pardon me if I didn't understand it right - it sounds like "let's cook the mushrooms, and then dry them"? I wouldn't go there myself. The structure breaks down too much, there's vital fluids leaking out, and what's left would be difficult to work with to dry.

Re: A practice run at oven drying

I've been seeing what looks to me like some scorching. While I have the "convection" fan on, I know from cooking in that oven that the temperatures will be higher in some places than others. As I imagine is usually the case.

For what it's worth, I've sometimes done that, to no ill effect.

Re: Oven Drying

If you can keep it to the lower end of that range, reliably, then it looks OK to me. 87°C (188.6°F) is hotter than I think is recommended, though honestly I may have lost track of the optimum temperature - I think it's 160-170°F. I just hauled in an armload of the stuff and have been drying it in th...

... repetitive injections of ibotenic acid Don't do that, for sure - inject it into your brain, or anywhere else. For more realistic scenarios, liking eating a little or drinking an infusion, I doubt we'll ever have really detailed information on health effects - the chemistry of the species is too...

After a few hours nothing had happened, so i fried the soggy mushrooms in butter, salt, and chilli flakes till they were crisp, and served on a slice of sourdough, it was delicious, what an incredible umami flavour they have!
Sounds brilliant. We need a recipes section.

Re: Conversion up to 90% or 60% question

Additionally, how long would I dry my Amanitas in 70C for? I've heard 24h on one of Amanita Dreamer's videos, but many friends of mine did it only 6-8 hours and was just fine. In other words, does the conversion of Ibotenic acid to muscimol finish when the mushroom is cracker dry or even if it's dr...

Re: Oven drying experiences

Interesting, that so much liquid dribbled out, but they didn't deteriorate. I cut mine in strips, and left the oven door open a bit and the convection fan on, and monitored temperature with a cheap oven thermometer, a dial type that hangs from an oven rack. It has been a while - it's the middle of s...
