Amanita hot water filtration - coffee

Post by neptox » Fri Apr 24, 2020 6:01 am

Hi all!

A while ago I bought a cheap portafilter espresso machine. It features a stainless steel fine grain filter, 15 Bar pressure and 80-100°C (176-212 F) temperature.

My question / idea is, wether the coffee-making method could be used for AM.

Why? Because if working, it might be a fast and easy way. Also it's fun to try :)

I just ordered new caps and will try the following recipe:

1. Break and grind the caps to power. ( I'll try filter coffee sized grain, as AM absorbs a lot of water and might clog the filter, if too finely ground.)

2. Stamp the powder into the filter, with low-medium force.

3. Let about one liter of water be pressed through the powder at ~90°C and 15 bar. ( one liter because I assume that Ibotenic Acid / Muscimol is less water soluble than coffein.

4. Test ;) and optionally add acid / heat afterwards for better conversion.

I'll video record it in german and publish my results here.

Did anyone try something similar before?
What is your guess about the outcome?
Any corresponding thoughts?

Kind regards,
Jeremias

Interesting idea, but I think the magic word is "simmering" :)

Anyway, report back when you have done your test.

Espresso is a kind of coffee preparation that manages to extract a reasonable amount of the oils and aromatics, while leaving behind things like tannins, so you can get a tasty drinkable brew that's only an ounce or so. Using a short exposure to brew water at elevated pressure and just the right temperature.

You'll get a lot of the muscimol and ibotenic acid this way, because they're plenty soluble, but probably leave a little more behind, than with a longer extraction. I guess the way to find out, would be to use a couple left-over "pucks" in a long simmer and see if the result has any effect.

The actives are highly water soluable. So much so that just rain can wash them out. So water and temps this high should do it without a whole liter of water. I suggest keep an eye on the water coming out and when it starts to look watery/clear, stop. This is a good idea BUT a lot of time and trouble. I would just put it on the stove, set a time and let it simmer. But I'm lazy.
