Amanita's and Mosquitoes

Post by Nomad » Fri Jun 11, 2021 1:44 am

I was surprised to find a few AM's growing in my yard today (I live in NY). We've had a hot and very wet week and I saw them pop up overnight.
I hemmed and hawed about picking them or letting them mature a bit but it seems the slugs had already found them. I went out just a bit ago, and it's dark here so I brought a flashlight to grab what I could. I managed to get two good sized ones at least.

What shocked me just as much as finding them in June was that they were absolutely covered by mosquitoes. I'm talking dozens on a few caps. They were walking on the surface of the caps and not flying away when I went to grab them.
The mosquitoes didn't follow me, or bother me at all while I was looking all the mushrooms over. Which was a bit puzzling too.

Does anyone have any experience with this, or possibly have some insight?

Here's something called a "fungus gnat":

I would say that is a real possibility then. I had no idea they existed at all, and they do very strongly resemble everyone's favorite bug.

I will definitively take a closer look. Thank you.
